Men's Oral Health

Men's Oral Health

June is National Men’s Health Month. According to research and surveys, males are less likely then woman to seek preventative dental care. Men also are more likely to develop periodontal disease and oral cancer then woman. This being said, it is important to know your risk factors and how to keep on track with your oral health.

Do you use tobacco?

Men who smoke or chew tobacco have a greater risk for gum disease and oral cancer. It is important for men who use tobacco to have frequent dental cleanings to ensure their mouth remains healthy. A general dentist can perform a comprehensive screening for oral cancer.

Do you take medications?

Some medications, such as heart or blood pressure medications can cause dry mouth. Men who take these medications have an increased risk of developing cavities. Saliva helps reduce the cavity-causing bacteria found in the mouth. Saliva also helps reduce the tooth-attacking acids formed by plaque.

Do you play sports?

When playing contact sports, such as baseball, football & hockey, it is important to use a mouth guard, to protect the teeth from trauma.

Below are some tips-whether you are a man or a woman-to improve your dental health:

  • Visit the dentist twice a year for cleanings and exams
  • Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss daily
  • Replace your toothbrush every three months
